2nd Grade: What will my student learn?

Biblical Formation

The Scripture memory focus in second grade helps students to answer the question of who we are. We are sinners in need of a Savior. They will focus on the Biblical events of Creation, the Fall, Redemption, and the Resurrection. The Biblical literacy skill focus for second grade is the organization of the books of the Bible. Students will learn to locate Scriptures using the table of contents and by knowing the order of the books.

Math

In second grade, students will focus on fact fluency in addition and subtraction, adding and subtracting with renaming up to 1000, multiplication (2s, 5s, & 10s), telling time, graphing, and mathematical application in the context of story.  After concrete mathematical exploration with manipulatives, students will engage with mathematics concepts using pictorial representations/models and number sentences/algorithms.

English Language Arts

Second graders explore handwriting, spelling, reading, and English writing/grammar during ELA time. Building on skills mastered in first grade, students practice phonics patterns in their spelling words. The handwriting focus is pre-cursive manuscript and beginning cursive. Second graders are provided with differentiated reading groups, with reading skills focused on nonfiction, fiction, articles, poetry and drama.  Writing/grammar covers composing a personal narrative, rhyming and non-rhyming poems, a friendly letter, an instructions paragraph, and an animal research report.

Science

In second grade, science is taught towards exposure with a goal of building background knowledge in our students. Second graders explore matter and motion, earth and space and how plants and animals grow and change.

Social Studies

At the second-grade level, Social Studies building background knowledge while addressing changes in communities, how government works, buying and selling, people and places, and American culture. Skill areas within social studies include comparing and contrasting point of view, constructing and interpreting a family tree, locating places using a grid map, measuring distance on a map using a map scale, and describing and identifying landforms and bodies of water in the US and local community.

Specials

During the 2022-2023 school year, the enrichment specials offered during the school day for second graders include art, PE, and Spanish. Specials are subject to change from year to year.

Special Opportunities (subject to change from year-to-year and campus-to-campus)

  • Field trips: Apple Orchard, Pumpkin Patch, Fair Day, Morehead Planetarium, Tree to Paper Demonstration, science explorations
  • Yearly assembly performances sponsored by grants from the United Arts Council
  • Participation in school-wide literacy events like Drop Everything and Read Day, Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day, Scholastic book clubs, and the book fair

Curriculum Integration

There are two main curriculum providers used in second grade. Math is taught using the Singapore Primary Mathematics 2022 edition. All other subject areas are taught using BJU programs (handwriting, spelling, reading, English writing/grammar, science, and heritage studies). The Keys for the Kingdom program is utilized during morning devotional time for Biblical formation.
